Los Angeles Crime Data Analysis 2024

Project Description

In a world of increasing criminal activity, many regions are interested in studying patterns of such incidents in order to adjust their approach to combating crime. This project focus on analyzing crime data based in Los Angeles, CA, in the last four years: 2020-2024.

It is aimed to answer the following questions:

  1. Which age group are the greatest target of the crimes committed between 2020 and 2024 ?
  2. What gender has the highest rate of victims ?
  3. What is the status rate of these crime cases?
  4. What is the rate of crime change between 2020 and 2024?

The answer to the above questions are filtered based on the following criteria:

  1. The crime committed,
  2. the location of the crime scene, and
  3. the weapon used in committing the crime.

Steps Taken

  1. Gathering the required data. (Data source)
  2. Cleaning and preparing data for analysis.
  3. Creating Pivot Tables to summarize data.
  4. Creating slicers, charts, to aggregate KPIs.
  5. Create dashboard, placing all objects, and linking them together for realtime filter analysis.
  6. Formatting and protecting all other worksheets to leave only the dashboard for interation.
  7. Finish the dashboard with theme customization.

Key Take Away

In analyzing this dataset, the report reveals the following key observations about crime in Los Angeles County over the last four years:

  1. Adult age group constitute the largest percentage (37.64%) of the victims of crimes committed.
  2. The male gender makeup 41% of the victims thus making them the highest targeted, while the female has 36% and others have 23% victims.
  3. Crime cases under investigations has the highest rate.
  4. Crime rate actually decreased by 91.73% from 2020 to 2024, implying that the current measures in place are positively affecting the crime rate.
